I’ll have the organic vodka, please

Organic alcohol seems like an oxymoron. But organic is so popular nowadays that the makers of wine, beer and vodka are coming out with chemical-free concoctions on a seemingly regular basis. Whether the products are about social consciousness or pure marketing is a question for another time. (Square One calls its certified organic rye vodka “social and socially conscious.”)

But if you’re going to drink, why not make it a cleaner cocktail?

Soon it will be much easier to drink organic while traveling around the country, thanks to a newly formed group called the Organic Beverage Alliance (soon found at www.organicbeveragealliance.org). Companies including Square One Vodka, beer maker Mateveza and Numi Teas have formed a trade group to sell their beverages as a package to hotels and major restaurant chains, according to one of the group’s members, Jim Woods, president and founder of Mateveza. The group launched this month.

“There’s a push for organics at hotels but it’s typically hard for buyers to piece together a portfolio (of drinks),” said Woods. “This group changes the equation.”

Question for the organics crowd: Is the mono-culture of vineyards a neutral or positive development in places like Napa?

I want to give some recognition to a small company out of Wisconsin - Death’s Door Spirits. This company has created two amazing products, a vodka and gin. Death’s Door Spirits prides itself in supporting local agriculture and sustainability. Death’s Door Vodka uses only organic wheat grown on Washington Island in Door County, Wisconsin. And the juniper berries for the gin are picked wild on Washington Island. Death’s Door Spirits actively participates and supports local farmers and agriculture. Death’s Door is generating a buzz around Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago. Death’s Door is another company worth noting in this growing field of sustainability.
